How To Draw Cartoon Animals: Easy African Giraffe for Young Kids 🦒

Giraffes are some of the most iconic animals on this planet! Everyone knows them for their long, long necks. Actually, my favorite features of a giraffe are its eyes! They have big and cute, dark eyes with natural eyeliner and enviable long eyelashes! A giraffe's facial features aren't easy to draw, especially for kids. They are very unique looking and there's no real mammal out there that looks quite like a giraffe. We're going to do a simplified version of a giraffe, just their face and a separate tutorial for the body. We're going to make it really cute and easy to follow along with! Let's go!

🎨 Parents:The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you're done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Draw a Giraffe's Face

  1. Draw an inverted "glass-like" face shape with a slightly curved line to divide the lower and upper parts of the giraffe's face. Make sure that the lower part of the face is smaller than the upper portion.
  2. At the top of the giraffe's face comes two short horns on each side with circular hairy ends.
  3. Then, draw two willow-shaped ears adjacently placed to each horn and highlight them by drawing another smaller willow-shape inside each.
  4. Now we've outlined our giraffe face; let's add details to its face! On the smaller part of the giraffe's face, draw two circular nose holes parallel to each other with a smiley curve below them.
  5. While on the bigger part of its face, draw three circular hairs between the horns – two small circular hairs on each side and a bigger circular hair in the middle.
  6. Below the hairs, draw another two circular eyes with a smaller circular iris inside each.
  7. We've completed our cute giraffe, so let's color it with a neutral shade of yellow, light orange, and warm brown. Add black details to the iris, nose, and hair! For the inner ear, color it pink.

A Step-by-Step Guide on How To Draw a Giraffe

  1. Draw an oval-shaped nose with a long semi-circular head on top of it.
  2. Next, draw two tiny oval-shaped ears on each side of the head and two vertical horns with circular ends between them.
  3. Then, on the right side of the head, connect two long vertical lines parallel to each other, forming the giraffe's long neck.
  4. After that, draw two small round eyes in the face and a long oval-shaped body connected to the neck.
  5. Beneath the body, draw eight long vertical lines parallel to each other and enclose them four oval-shaped feet, forming a set of four long-legged feet.
  6. Draw a diagonal line with a tiny oval-shaped hair at the end to form the tail behind the giraffe's body.
  7. Of course, never forget all the giraffe's marks! Draw it in big or small circles and semicircles. You can draw it in freestyle.
  8. To finally finish our art, let's color the feet, marks, and ears with dark brown, the nose with pale brown, the eyes with white, and the rest of the body with yellow!

Cool Giraffe Facts for Kids

  • These gentle giants, well known for their long necks, are the tallest living land animals in the world. An adult male can grow to around 5.5 m, higher than three adult humans.
  • The height of a giraffe is useful for keeping a watch out for animals, such as lions and hyenas. It's also suspected because they eat leaves from treetops, the giraffes with longer necks were able to get more food and passed on their long neck genes.
  • Giraffes lives in sub-Saharan Africa where it gets sandy. To keep sand out of their eyes, giraffes have long, lush eyelashes.
  • Giraffes don't drink much water. This is because of their leafy diets, they get much of their water from leaves, and they only need to drink once every few days.
  • Giraffe's excellent eyesight helps them from miles away to detect starving predators.
  • They use their long necks to reach the treetops with their leaves and buds. Their long tongues also allow them to pull up high leaves, spend most of their time eating, and can guzzle up to 99 LBS of leaves and twigs a day!
  • Giraffes sleep cycle is four to six hours every day, mostly at night. They can nap anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes and that's all they need in terms of sleep.
  • Giraffes can run for short distances as quickly as 35 miles an hour, or cruise for longer distances at 10 mph.
  • Giraffes have horns that are covered by hair, both male and female giraffes have these horns.
  • Males will use their horns and their necks (yes necks!) while fighting for dominance.
  • Speaking of necks, humans and giraffes have the same number of neck bones. Except for the giraffe, their neck bone is much larger and longer in size.
  • Giraffes don't like being alone, they live in herds called Towers. Giraffes are very social animals.
  • They are some of the tallest mammals around. Baby giraffes grow over 1 inch a day in the first week of their birth!
